Anna Kolb Bean’s Recipe Book

Brian F. Moyer, son of Willoughby Moyer and great-grandson of Anna Kolb Bean, took the recipes from the book that Willoughby created from Anna’s recipes and scanned them into a computer. Using Anna’s recipes, Willoughby created recipe books for each of his children. The pages in those books were printed on a dot-matrix printer and stored on a floppy disk from a TRS computer.

With the help of Artificial Intelligence, each scanned page was made into a Word document, and the recipes have been categorized, making the book a bit more user-friendly.

Anna Williams Kolb was born October 7, 1865 on the Kolb family farm between Creamery and Rahns. She was married June 4, 1887 to Warren G. Bean and lived at Green Hill Farm on Grange Avenue and Green Hill Road until 1930. At that time, they moved to Creamery where she lived until her death on November 9, 1944.

She collected these recipes throughout her life. This collection was copied to computer disc by her grandson, Willoughby Moyer, in September 1990. No corrections or alterations were made; it is exactly as she wrote it in a 6″ by 12″ accounting ledger. She began it when she went to housekeeping in 1887.

There are few handling instructions which she probably thought were common knowledge. Also oven temperatures are not specified. All recipes prior to WWII were for wood-fired range; she sometimes mentions ‘moderate oven’ or ‘quick oven.’
