Bob Culp of Georgetown, TX has contributed some information relevant to his Culp ancestors.
He believes that his Culp ancestors have roots in Pennsylvania, but he is still searching for details and proof.

JOHANN PHILLIP KOLB b. 08 Sep 1734 – d. Abt. 1839

Born in Struebelmuehle, Jagst, Wuerttemberg, Germany on 08 Sep 1734. (no record other than Internet sources).  It is known from family records that he preferred to be called Phillip, possibly to avoid confusion with his second son, Johann (John).

FROM RESEARCHER BARBARA KROL:

A Johann Philipp Kolb arrived in Philadelphia on the ship “Neptune” from Rotterdam and took the oath and affirmance to the government (British) on Monday, September 30, 1754.  The ship’s Captain Waire listed Johann from Wurttemberger, Germany (this information was from Daniel Kolb Cassel’s A Genealogical History of the Kolb, Kulp or Culp Family).

1st known child, Michael Culp, b. 1755 in PA; m. Magdalena (Roth) Rhodes bef. 1784 in PA; d. 1828 in Columbiana, OH.  There is a good bit of information on Michael and ties to York Co., PA for additional research.  Consider the following:

An article in the Elkhart County, IN newspaper dated 8 Sep 1909 states: “Michael Culp, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1755….He was a friend of General George Washington and an engineer, being engaged in building forts during the Revolutionary War”.

Page 416 of an article titled, “Youngstown and The Mahoning Valley” states that in 1804 Michael Culp (son of Phillip) went to Fayette Co., PA and from there to Beaver, PA in 1815 (then Bever Township), to East Lewistown, Mahoning Co., OH”.

He is listed in 1779, 1780, 1781, 1782 and 1783 tax records in York Co., PA.

He is in the tax records for 1784 & 1787 in Rockingham Co., VA (1784 – 3 whites and 1 dwelling).

He is in the 1787 VA Census with five horses and two cattle.

He is in the 1788 tax list with four horses.

He is in the 1790 VA Census with three ‘whites, one dwelling, and no out buildings.

He is in the 1792 tax list with five horses, five in 1798, two in 1800, and four in 1801.

He and Magdaleana deeded Rockingham County land to Jacob Wisecar on 15 February 1803.

He bought land on 21 Mar 1803 in German Township, Fayette Co., PA.  He was living on this land by 1804 and still there for the 1810 census.  He was living in Columbia Co., PA for the 1815 census and resided in Springfield Township, Columbiana Co., OH from 1820 until his death in 1828.

Michael and Magdalena are both buried at Midway Mennonite Church in Mahoning County, Ohio.

From the above, it can be determined that Michael left York Co., PA for Rockingham Co. VA in 1783 or 1784.  Johann Phillip may have migrated to Rockingham Co., VA at the same time, may have established residence there earlier, or joined them later.  For that matter, the only evidence I have found that Johann Phillip was ever in Rockingham Co., VA., is a note from Dorothy Beede Berry of Columbiana, Ohio:  “Philipp Kolb of Rockingham Co., VA was the father of Michael Kolb/Culp (1753-1828).  Note:  Other sources have Michael born in 1755 in Pennsylvania.”

It is my belief that Johann Phillip Kolb stayed in PA with other offspring (most likely York Co.).

2nd known child, John Culp, b. bef. 1762; m. Anna Marie Garringer abt. 1784 in Rockingham Co., VA; d. 1829 in Dawson’s, Beringer Ground Co., VA.  Apparently, very little research has been done on John.  Consider the following:

John Culp was listed in the Virginia Census for Rockingham Co., VA, in 1787 (age 25 at least).  John and his brother Henry were listed in the Rockingham County Minutes Book (part 2, 1786 – 1788, page 682) on 22 Jan 1787 along with David Branan as indebted to the Govenor of Virginia (20lbs. – John ; 10 lbs. – Henry).  He was listed on the 1788 tax list with two horses, but not included on future tax lists.  It is possible that John moved across the county line into Augusta County, as there was a John Culp in the Augusta County Court Extracts 1745 – 1800.  This John was listed under “Insolvents and Delinquents”.  John did sell Rockingham Co., VA land to David Bush in June 1799.

3rd known child, Henry Culp, b. 28 Feb 1762 in PA; m. Dorothae abt. 1780 in PA; d. aft. 1835 in Rushcreek Township, Fairfield Co., OH (see separate info sheet for details on this Henry).

All three sons appeared on the 1787 Rockingham Co., VA Census (Personal Property Tax List).   Michael and Henry were assigned to Militia Company 15, and John was assigned to Militia Company 17.  This date is three years before the Funks arrived in Rockingham Co., VA.

It is purely speculation on my part, at this point, to say that Johann Phillip Kolb is the father of Michael, John, and Henry.  However, several researchers are diligently putting pieces of this same puzzle together.  Listed below is some of the information that has been gathered thus far (some information is repeated:

FROM RESEARCHER BARBARA KROL:

A Johann Philipp Kolb arrived in Philadelphia on the ship “Neptune” from Rotterdam and took the oath and affirmance to the government (British) on Monday, September 30, 1754.  The ship’s Captain Waire listed Johann from Wurttemberger, Germany (this information was from Daniel Kolb Cassel’s A Genealogical History of the Kolb, Kulp or Culp Family).

Two years previously, Anton Roth (Rhodes) arrived on the same ship and took the oath on October 4, 1752.  His daughter, Magdalena Rhodes married Michael Kolb/Culp (Johann’s son) in Pennsylvania before 1784.  Anton was known to have been from Wurttemberger, Germany.

In a hand written note from Fred Daniel Culp: “Michael’s father – Philip d. 105 yrs.”

Notes from “History of the Kolb, Kulp, and Culp Families”, by Daniel Cassell, 1894.

page 553:  A letter written in 1894 by E.C. Culp of Salina, KS states “Henry Culp came to Ohio from Virginia, Rockingham County.  Henry Culp had six sons and some daughters, Christian, Henry, Jacob, John, and David.  The descendants of the brothers removed to northwest and western Ohio, Illinois, and from there have scattered over the west”.

page 557:  A letter written in 1895 by Mrs. Sherman Culp of Plymouth, OH, states: “His (Christian Culp’s) father’s name was Henry Culp, and the names of his brother and sisters were Jacob, David, Benona, Mary, Sallie and Hannah.  I understood it (the Culp Family Bible) was in Findlay, Ohio, with some of the Culps there”.  Note: This must be in reference to the descendants of Henry’s son Benoni (Christian’s brother) who lived in and around Findlay.

Notes from Ed Brumbach, in his history of the Brumbach family of Fairfield County, Ohio, gives the children as Jacob (1786 – 1831), Mary (1787 – 1857), Christian (1790 – 1849), Sarah (1793 – 1845), and possibly Hannah, David, Benoni, Henry, and Sallie.

HENRY CULP b. 24 Feb 1781 – d. 1838

7th known child, Samuel Culp, b. 1811 in Rockingham Co., VA; m. Mary Hufford.

Henry’s 127 acre farm in Singer’s Glen was just north of the community (photographs available).  This is believed to be the three parcels of land that he purchased from Jacob (Henry, according to Swank) Toffinger on 16 September 1811.

8th known child, David Culp, b. 30 Sep 1813 in Rockingham Co., VA; m. Catherine Mohr 12 Aug 1841 in Logan Co., OH; d. 30 Mar 1886 in Logan Co., OH.

In the spring of 1830, Henry set out on horseback from Virginia to find a location for a home in the West. He came to Union Township, Logan Co., Ohio and entered 40 acres in the “Fallen Timber” district in the west side of the township.  In 1831 he brought his entire family of about fifteen persons, including his son-in-law, Samuel Claytor, Nancy, a widowed daughter and her three children.  They set out from Rockingham County, Virginia, with a three horse team, arrived in the fall, and put up in the cabin which had been prepared for them.  They arrived in Logan Co. before the marriage of their son, Henry, to Mary Powell on 15 December 1831.  Two sons, Joseph and Jacob, followed the next year. They improved the forty acres of government land which they had entered, and succeeded well in the new country.  Henry’s occupation was that of a miller, and he continued in the Mennonite faith.  He died intestate and the Court appointed Joseph, his oldest son, to administer the estate (copy of Court document available).

EVIDENCE OF PENNSYLVANIA ORIGINATION:

The 1880 Census quotes Christian, Henry’s son, as saying that his father was born in Pennsylvania.

In Baskins History of Logan County, Ohio, David Culp (son of Henry and Fanny) was quoted as saying that his father was a miller by trade, and had moved to Virginia from Pennsylvania when he was young.

In Perrin’s “History of Alexander, Union, and Pulaski Counties, Illinois”, Nancy Culp (daughter of Henry born 11 July 1879 in Rockingham Co., VA, and Mary Powell) indicated that her father was from Pennsylvania and her mother from Maine or Ohio.  Either Nancy was incorrect, or Perrin misinterpreted what she said – because Henry was from Virginia and Mary was from Maine or Delaware.  They did come to Union Co., Illinois by way of Ohio, but I believe the Pennsylvania reference eludes to Henry’s earlier roots.

In a letter from Clifton Winfred Culp (son of Joseph born 30 October 1856 and grandson of Henry born 11 July 1879) to his son in law Fred Hill dated June 9, 1950, he states that his grandparents were born and reared in Pennsylvania.  Again, this in incorrect, but it is indicative of the family claim to Pennsylvania roots passed down to another generation.

Several family history files found in the Stinson Memorial Library in Anna, Union Co., IL, referenced the Culp family coming from Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Ohio before settling in Illinois.

Henry’s marriage surety (consent form) was signed by a Henry Culp.  I believe this Henry was his father, the Henry Culp born in Pennsylvania in 1762.

BURIAL: Most sources believe that Henry was buried in Logan Co., Ohio, on Daniel Funk’s farm west of Bellefontaine.  Other sources believe that he was buried on the farm of his son, David Culp.  Both farms should be in the same general area of Union Township.  The Ohio Death Index places Henry’s death in 1836, instead of 1838 used by most researchers.
