“CARL LEO KULP was born in Darmstadt, Germany, November 7, 1885. He is the son of Karl Balthaser Kulp and Valesca Kulp.  On February 14, 1895, he married Ruth Ottilie Merkleker at Heidelberg.

“During the World War, Carl Leo Kulp was a Major in the German army.  He was wounded in action, losing the sight of his right eye by a gun shot through the head.

“As a historian, his collection of coats of arms is known as the third largest in Germany, comprising more than 40,000 specimens. It is especially valuable because it contains many thousands of coats of arms of citizens not members of noble families of Germany. Included in the collection re those families of Kulp, Von Kulpis, Kulpen and 21 coats of arms of Kolb and Von Kolb. Through extensive research over many years, he assembled an uninterrupted history of the Family dating back to the year 1539.

“He resides in Darmstadt with this wife and three children. The names of the children are Annemarie, born November 28, 1915; Eberhard Friedrich, born December 18, 1916; and Franz George Alfred, born February 19, 1919.

“In military affiars, Carl Leo Kulp and members of his immediate family have attained high honors. His brother Franz Arthur, born Aprill 11, 1879, was a Colonel of Infantry, Regiment Prinz Carl No. 118 and Leader of Flying Squadron 35. He was wounded in action during the World War. Upon recovery he was assigned to a flying squadron in Russia, where, while leading it in action, he was killed on August 9, 1917.

“Carl Leo Kulp’s oldest son, Eberhard Friedrich, was an officer at the age of 18.  He is the fifth Kulp in four generations to be attached to the Hessian Infantry Regiment.
